Smart Steel: Guaranteed Fit and Full Traceability

Automated Cutting, Permanent Marking, Complete Traceability

Smart Steel is State Service Company's process for automated steel cutting, permanent piece marking and complete material traceability. Every component is cut to project geometry, marked so it can never be misidentified, and tracked by heat number from the moment steel arrives at the Ingleside yard to the moment the finished module loads out.

Steel components with permanent piece marking and heat numbers

Automated Cutting

Cut to project geometry, so the pieces fit at assembly.

Permanent Piece Marking

Project identification marked on the steel itself.

Heat Number Tracking

Traceable from receipt through shipment, years later.

Traceability That Survives the Whole Build

On every project, State Service maintains 100% material traceability. Steel is tracked piece by piece from receipt through fabrication to shipment. Each piece carries the heat number of the batch it came from, and project identification is marked directly on the steel, so a component can be traced to its origin at any point in the build without paperwork archaeology.

That matters twice. During fabrication it prevents the wrong plate ending up in the wrong assembly. After delivery it means any weld, any member and any spool can be tied back to its material test report years later, which is what regulators and asset integrity teams ask for.

Guaranteed Fit

Components are cut by automated process to project geometry rather than marked and cut by hand. Precision at the cut means the pieces fit at assembly, and fit at assembly means fewer field adjustments on a module that has already shipped.

Each project carries its own NDE and weld matrices, so inspection scope is defined against the actual joint configuration rather than a generic standard.

Local Content Compliance

Many international projects carry local content requirements that oblige an owner to source a share of fabrication in-country. Those requirements often conflict with the schedule and quality control an owner wants.

Smart Steel lets State Service cut, mark and kit components in Ingleside and ship them for assembly where local content rules require it. The precision and traceability travel with the steel, so the in-country assembly is working from parts that are guaranteed to fit and fully documented.

What Smart Steel Delivers

  • Heat number tracking from receipt through shipment
  • Project-specific NDE and weld matrices
  • 100% material traceability
  • Guaranteed fit at assembly
  • Support for local content requirements on international projects
  • Complete as-built documentation for structures, piping and vessels

Smart Steel underpins every scope in modular fabrication and runs across the whole yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Smart Steel actually track?

Every piece of steel, by heat number, from receipt at the yard through fabrication to load-out, with project identification marked on the material itself.

How does Smart Steel help with local content requirements?

Components can be cut, marked and kitted in Ingleside, then shipped for assembly in-country where regulations require local fabrication content, without losing precision or traceability.

Is Smart Steel used on every project?

Traceability is maintained on all State Service projects. Automated cutting and piece marking apply across fabrication scope.
